Las Vegas, November 30th, 2019- Nothing ever goes according to script for Oscar Valdez 27-0 21KOs. But then again, would he be as fun to watch if it did?
The Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan was rocking and rolling with a combination of Irish and Mexican fans that made for a rowdy atmosphere. Perfect for an Oscar Valdez fight.
After a cautious first round, a right cross-left hook combination from Lopez dropped Valdez to shock the crowd and Twitter timelines everywhere.
Valdez slowly worked his way back into the fight but Lopez was boxing with a sharp jab and good movement to counter the more patient style of Valdez.
In the seventh Valdez got going with more offense maybe feeling behind on the scorecards and landed a right hand that sent Lopez reeling. A follow up combination of punches put Lopez down and the tide of fight turned.
Valdez stalked Lopez landing big hooks over the top of Lopez’s gloves until referee Russel Mora jumped in to call a halt to the fight at 2:53 in the seventh round.
“I was very surprised. I take my hat off to Adam Lopez. He’s a great fighter, great warrior, just like his father {the late Hector Lopez} was. I just got hit. This is boxing. I prepared myself for two, three months for {Andres} Gutierrez, but that’s no excuse. This kid is a warrior.” Valdez said after the fight.
The victory for Valdez sets up an all Mexican showdown at super featherweight with Miguel Berchelt the WBC Champion in a fight that could produce fireworks for as long as it lasts.
“Berchelt is a true champion inside the ring and outside the ring. Fans love him. That’s the one I want to fight. He has that WBC belt, and he’s trying to take it back home.”
