WBC Announces Superfly Super Tournament

on

On Friday The World Boxing Council (WBC) announced a Super Flyweight super tournament to enthrone their 115-lb Champion. The WBC stated there will be a third fight between the current unified WBA/WBC Champion Juan “El Gallo” Francisco Estrada and Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez. They also stated that they will order a fight between the former WBC champions Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and Carlos Cuadras, with the winners of each bout to face each other later.

To make this new tournament come to fruition the WBC had elevated their current Super Flyweight Champion, Francisco “Gallo” Estrada to “Franchise Champion.”  A title only held by two other fighters in the world, current unified lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez and the current number one pound for pound fighter in the world Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

The request for a trilogy between Estrada and Gonzalez came naturally after both warriors were involved in the possible fight of the year on March 13th in Dallas, Texas. A unification bout that Estrada won by a close and controversial split decision to unify the WBC and WBA world titles. With that victory and with former champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai winning his last fight Sor Rungvisai became the mandatory challenger for Estrada.

The WBC received the following request and gave the following resolution

  1. WBC Super Flyweight World Champion Juan Francisco Estrada has requested to be designated Franchise Boxer of the division.
  1. The division’s Mandatory Challenger Srisaket Sor Rungvisai has requested to fight for the WBC World Title in light of the fact that he stepped aside, to allow the Estrada vs Gonzalez recent rematch.
  1. Furthermore, there is worldwide public demand for the third Estrada vs Gonzalez fight. Their recent bout is already being considered as the fight of the year so far, with 2,529 thrown punches and 0 clinches.

Resolution

The Super Fly Tournament concept created by renowned promoter Tom Loeffler has produced great fights involving the four fighters, who will now all take part in the WBC Super Fly Super Tournament.

1. Juan “El Gallo” Estrada has now been elevated to “Franchise Champion”

2. The Estrada v. Gonzalez III rematch has been approved.

3. Srisaket Sor Rungvisai shall fight Carlos Cuadras for the vacant WBC Super Flyweight World Championship.

4. The winners of Estrada v. Gonzalez and Srisaket v. Cuadras fights shall fight each other to determine the sole WBC World Champion of the Super Flyweight Division

The WBC is extremely satisfied to be able to design the WBC Super Fly Super Tournament; a structure of upcoming bouts, which brings the best fights to the boxing fans while accomplishing just and fair results, all within the mandates of the governing WBC Rules and Regulations.

Now fight fans will be in for what seems to be a lead-up to the Superfly 4, a boxing series that showcased the fighters at the 115-lb division and was a smash hit for boxing fans worldwide and especially the fans that caught the installments live in Southern California. A series that showcased all four current fighters involved in the current WBC Super Flyweight tournament. There have already been ten fights between Carlos Cuadras, Chocolatito, Rungvisai and Estrada, and for fans of this fight game hopefully the best is yet to come.
