Nevada Suspends Saul Canelo Alvarez For Clenbuterol Use

Las Vegas (March 23, 2018)- On Friday the Nevada State Athletic Commission acted late on two positive urine samples by Saul Alvarez by suspending the Mexican fighter until a hearing on April 10th. The positive tests came back in February with annotations on the publicly released VADA document stating the tests were in line with meat contamination by Dr. Daniel Eichner Director of SMRTL.

The suspension puts the mega-event rematch between Canelo and Gennady Golovkin in doubt.

Few doubt the suspension will hold given the huge amount of money the fight will generate but the threat of a cancellation is real after the sports biggest draw tested positive. Since the positive test Golovkin has been vocal in his suspicion of Canelo’s use of PED’s in the past saying “Again with the Mexican meat? Come on?” Golovkin continued “I told you, it’s not Mexican meat. This is Canelo. This is his team. This is his promotion. Canelo is cheating. They’re using these drugs, and everybody is trying to pretend it’s not happening.”

Canelo responded with posts on Instagram showing videos of him working out and the quotes “Little B–ch” and “I’m going to kick your f–king ass”.

The feud between the two has heated from what was a cordial build-up to their first encounter. A full on Jerry Springer bedlam episode is erupting on social media by trolls and fans.

“Canelo is cheating. They’re using these drugs, and everybody is trying to pretend it’s not happening.”

Meanwhile, there are thousands of people with thousands of dollars in tickets and hotel room reservations left wondering if they will have to cancel plans.

The immense dropping of the ball by the NSAC in handling the matter a month after the positive tests leaves a bad taste in the mouths of commentators and boxing media. Speculation that April 10th is nothing more than a formal date to clear Alvarez of wrong doing and that the test results were indeed caused by meat contamination. Then why the suspension?

Saving face.
