Canelo and Golovkin Strike a Deal
Los Angeles (June 13, 2018)- Suddenly, the world makes sense again. Saul Canelo Alvarez (49-1-2 34KO’s) and Gennady Golovkin (38-0-1 34KO’s) have come to terms and made a deal to rematch the controversial draw from their first fight.
Promoter’s Golden Boy and Tom Loeffler tweeted today that a deal had been struck for the most anticipated fight in boxing.

After failing two drug test for performance enhancing substances Canelo reduced his take from the originally agreed upon 65-35 split before the first rematch was cancelled in April. Golovkin stayed busy in May and fought late replacement Vanes Martirosyan for one third of the guaranteed 3 million he made against Alvarez las September. Alvarez made a guaranteed 5 million last September but earned an estimated 50 million after Pay Per View sales generated over one million buys.

Following the positive tests for the now infamous substance clenbuterol Golovkin demanded a 50/50 split on “principles” after a slew of barb trading from both Alvarez and Golovkin.
Agreeing to a 57.5/42.5 split, Alvarez acquiesced to Golovkin’s demands to sweeten the deal after the fall out and profusion of bad publicity for the cash cow of Golden Boy. Neither promoter has disclosed the terms of the entire deal yet but its rumored that incentives were given to Golovkin to make the fight.
The rematch looks to breathe life back into the dying boxing coverage of HBO. A mediocre 2018 has put the once powerhouse of boxing broadcast into third place behind rival Showtime and new player ESPN with the ESPN+ app.
